Germany's North Sea Islands: 366 Properties, and 277 of Them Are on Juist

Germany's North Sea islands are the best-photographed holiday region in our German catalogue: 366 properties, 331 of them with a picture — 90.4%, against a German average of 26%. That is a real and unusual thing. It is also, read carelessly, a lie. Two hundred and seventy-seven of the 366 are on one island, five of the fourteen islands we looked for hold nothing at all, and the biggest resort on the German North Sea coast is not in here.

Where these numbers come from. The German National Tourist Board publishes accommodation records collected by the regional tourism boards as open data. We hold 44,413 active German records. The island set below is every row whose town name or postcode places it on one of the seven East Frisian islands, the North Frisian islands, Helgoland, Pellworm or Nordstrand — 366 rows. Re-derived on 17 August 2026; the denominator is printed with every share.

Nine islands, and only one of them properly

The commissioning brief for this article gave 362 properties and 327 photographs. A complete town list — the brief's missed Hörnum and Wenningstedt-Braderup on Sylt — gives 366 and 331. The four extra rows do not change anything. The distribution does.

Norderney is the finding. It is the largest of the East Frisian islands and one of the busiest seaside resorts in Germany, and our register holds nothing for it — no hotel, no flat, no address. Langeoog and Baltrum likewise. North Frisia is barely present: ten rows across the whole of Sylt, none on Föhr or Amrum. The register is not thin on these islands because the islands are quiet. It is thin because the boards that publish into this feed are not their boards.

Juist is the most completely documented town in our whole German catalogue

Thirty-nine German towns hold 150 rows or more. Juist is the only one of them where a photograph, a description and a telephone number are all present on more than 80% of the rows — and it clears 93% on the first of those. The towns above it on picture rate alone are Wikidata building sets: Dresden's 101 rows are 100% photographed and 26% described, because they are photographs of buildings with nobody's phone number attached.

And it is not one photograph each. The 277 Juist rows carry 2,542 images between them — an average of 9.2, a maximum of 30, with 207 rows holding three or more and 110 holding ten or more. Across all of Germany only 1,474 rows reach ten images, so Juist alone holds 7% of them. The hero images are 254 distinct files on 259 rows, and not one carries the Symbolbild, Stockfoto or Blindbild naming that marks a placeholder elsewhere in the German feed.

It is a holiday-flat island, and that is what makes it remarkable

The German property class with the worst documentation is the Ferienwohnung: 19,589 of them nationally, 12.8% with a picture. Juist's register is 206 holiday flats and 199 of them are photographed. It is the same class, the same feed and the same country, run properly.

Two islands, one feed, two completely different vocabularies

Juist and Wangerooge arrive through the same national feed and look equally well documented on the headline measures. They are not answering the same questions. Juist's records use 214 distinct amenity tokens across 261 rows. Wangerooge's use eighteen, across 65.

This is why cross-island filtering fails. Wi-Fi is recorded on 72 Juist properties and on no Wangerooge property — not because Wangerooge has no Wi-Fi, but because the token is not in its board's vocabulary. The same is true of washing machines, and of dogs: 27 Juist rows answer the pets question and 24 of those say yes; not one Wangerooge or Borkum row answers it at all.

What to do with this

1. If you want to browse pictures before you go, Juist is the island our data can actually show you — 2,542 photographs across 277 places, and a phone number on 95% of them.
2. Never conclude anything from an empty island. Norderney's zero is our gap, not a shortage of beds there.
3. Compare within an island, not across islands. A Wangerooge record and a Juist record are not filled in from the same list of questions, so a side-by-side amenity comparison is meaningless.
4. Ring for the things that decide a North Sea holiday. Ferry times, luggage handling, whether cars are allowed, the visitor tax, and how far the flat is from the beach are all absent from this register — every one of them.

What we don't know

• No ferry timetables, no visitor tax, no car rules, no distance to the beach. These are the things a North Sea island holiday turns on, and the register holds none of them. Juist and Wangerooge are car-free; that is public knowledge, not something our data records.
• No prices and no review scores. Thirty-two rows in the entire 132,375-row catalogue carry a review score.
• Six of the 366 rows are Wikidata building entries — three on Juist, two on Sylt, one on Borkum — with a photograph and no phone, no description and no amenity data. They may or may not still trade.
• Three Juist rows are near-duplicates of another Juist row, filed under slightly different names by two feeds.
• The island list is ours. We looked for fourteen islands and found rows on five. A different postcode list would give a slightly different total; ours is printed above so you can check it.
• Coverage is a tourist board's decision, and it can change. Any of these zeroes could be filled next quarter, and Juist's completeness is one office's work rather than a property of the island.
